The story of father's day

Impressed by the commemoration surrounding mother's day, it was Sonora Dodd, a resident of Spokane, Washington, who first realised the need of a father's day.

Sonora's father, William Smart, a widower had raised his six children all by himself. A civil war veteran, Mr. Smart, had showered his children with not only a selfless love but also with responsibility.

He had been their father as well as their mother. Sonora not only wanted to show her gratification for this self- effacing act of her father but also wanted to thank him in her own special way.

With her efforts and dedication, the first father's day was celebrated on 19th of June 1910, in the town of Spokane, Washington. Incidentally, it was a week after Sonora's father's birthday.

She had initially favoured 5th June, which falls on her father's day, but due to unavailability of date, the Mayor declared 19th June instead. Though, President Calvin Coolidge made father's day a national event, it was not until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson with official presidential stamping declared the third Sunday of June as National Father's Day.

Father's day is thus a symbol to honour and commemorate all the fathers of this world, who have stood by us through thick and thin and have been the pillar of strength.

Another interesting fact is that the symbol of father's day is the White Lilac, as well as roses. Sonora used red roses to signify the dads who are with us, while the white roses honored the ones who had departed.
