The ritual of the first mother's day dates back in the year of 1914. It was Ana Jarvis, a resident of Philadelphia, US who had been campaigning for establishing a national mother's day after the demise of her mother on 9th may 1908. Ana not only wanted to commemorate not only her mother but also all the other mothers, who had sacrificed their life to nurture us. Moved by such a noble thought, President Woodrow Wilson declared the day of May 9th as National Mother's Day, which is coincidentally the death anniversary of Ana's mother. Mother's day is thus a symbol to immortalize the love you share with your mother. Another interesting fact is that the symbol of mother's day is the Carnation. Pink carnations signify the mothers who are with us, while the whites symbolize the ones who have departed into the other realms of the arcadia. There is an interesting story that it was because of the President William McKinley, that the carnations became the official flower of mothers' day. It is said that the president had the habit of wearing white carnations, which was incidentally his mother's favourite colour. Since then, the carnations have epitomised the spirit of mother's day.
